Financial Insecurity in the 2nd Half of Life [Survey] - Career Pivot
Budgetary Insecurity in the second Half of Life [Survey] - Career Pivot Budgetary Insecurity Do you experience the ill effects of budgetary frailty? I was stunnedâ"however on the other hand I wasn'tâ"the point at which I read the article, The Secret Shame of Middle Class Americans â" Nearly 50% of Americans would experience difficulty discovering $400 to pay for a crisis. I'm one of them, in The Atlantic this month. Pause for a minute to peruse this extensive article on the grounds that the writer, a fruitful essayist of 5 books, would unmistakably be viewed as working class, yet falls into the classification of experiencing difficulty discovering $400 to pay for a crisis. Central bank Board Survey The Federal Reserve Board runs theSurvey of Consumer Financesevery three years. The most recent report had nothing historic in it, except for one thing. It is best expressed by the writer of The Atlantic article,Neal Gabler: The Fed approached respondents how they would pay for a $400 crisis. The appropriate response: 47 percent of respondents said that it is possible that they would cover the cost by obtaining or selling something, or they would not have the option to think of the $400 by any stretch of the imagination. 400 dollars! Who knew? Amazing! At the point when I left my short spell as a secondary school math instructor in mid 2006 and joined the positions of the jobless, I was stunned at the quantity of previous partners who were battling. At that point came the Great Recession quite a long while later. I surmise I was visually impaired with respect to the degree that a portion of my previous associates were battling. They experienced budgetary instability, or what Neal Gabler called Monetary Impotence. Neal states: I like to think I show up sensibly prosperous. Nor would you realize it to take a gander at my list of qualifications. I have had an acceptably decent vocation as an authorâ"five books, many articles distributed, various honors and partnerships, and a (little) yet good notoriety. You wouldn't realize it to take a gander at my government form. I am not even close to rich, yet I have normally made a strong center or even, now and again, upper-working class salary, which is pretty much every one of the an author can expect, even an essayist who likewise instructs and addresses and composes TV contents, as I do. What's more, you absolutely wouldn't realize it to converse with me, in light of the fact that the exact opposite thing I could ever doâ"as of not long agoâ"is admit to monetary instability or, as I consider it, money related feebleness, since it has a significant number of the qualities of sexual ineptitude, not least of which is the urgent need to cover it and imagine everything is going great. In truth, it might be more humiliating than sexual ineptitude. You are bound to get notification from your mate that he is on Viagra than that he has Mastercard issues, says Brad Klontz, a monetary therapist who educates at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and pastors to people with budgetary issues. Substantially more likely. America is a nation, as Donald Trump has reminded us, of champs and washouts, alphas and weaklings. To battle monetarily is a wellspring of disgrace, a day by day mortificationâ"even a type of social self destruction. Quietness is the main assurance. Tune in to the latest scene Does this sound natural? Is Financial Insecurity seriously? I have had conversations with a few people over the most recent couple of days about this subject. Some of them made some hard memories accepting that, for 47% of the respondents, this was conceivable. It returned me to my initial days at IBM. Everybody I worked with madegood money.Lots of them lived in a similar neighborhood, which we lovingly called IBM ghettos. The greater part of the individuals I connected with were IBMers. Hence, their perspective on the world was that everybody was off. I think this is a significantly more serious issue today. I live in Austin, Texas, the most monetarily isolated network in America.Yeah, it is one prosperous city, yet not for everybody. Austin came out close to the highest priority on the rundown inWhere Not to Be Old and Jobless. Money related weakness is genuine, however it isn't obvious to everybody. It is anything but difficult to glance around and just view the scene you need to see. Hell, take a gander at our present US presidential races! There are a ton of irate individuals venting their disappointments. Does this unexpected the individuals in Washington, DC? Of course. Resigning into Poverty I will arrive at that enchantment age of sixty soon. I am presently observing companions kick the bucket or become sick. I know other people who will be compelled to resign into destitution. They will not, at this point have the option to work because of medical problems, and the main pay they will have will originate from Social Security. Resigning into neediness is a genuine opportunities for huge areas of children of post war America. Did I see this coming? Actually no, not so much. Why? We don't discuss it. It is humiliating. Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom Building a Team Using Myers-Briggs
Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Building a Team Using Myers-Briggs Youâve probably heard of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator even if you havenât taken it yourself already. According to the testâs website, the MBTI is one of the most widely-used psychological instruments for describing and measuring personality characteristics, and is used in more than 80 of the Fortune 100 companies. Its goal is to encourage optimal communication and teamwork among different personalities, and the four main dimensions of characteristics within the MBTI are: Introversion OR Extroversion Sensing OR Intuition Thinking OR Feeling Judging OR Perceiving A total of 16 personality types are possible. The MBTI is not meant to label the entirety of oneâs personality, but to identify the unique ways in which an individual interprets information, communicates, and views the world and others. The purpose of the MBTI is not to pigeonhole people, but simply to identify which extreme we tend to lean toward. Administering the MBTI to employees gives you, the manager, the opportunity to better understand your employeesâ strengths, as well as identify their communication and working styles. It is also helpful in assisting both you and your employees in determining the âwhyâ behind their behavior. Benefits of the Myers-Briggs for Teams One of my past employers had everyone post their Myers-Briggs type above their desks. The idea was that if you understood where your teammates were coming from, you would be more tolerant of their differences and could resolve conflicts more easily. It is known, for example, that introverted types who rely on data and facts to make decisions tend to butt heads with the extroverts, who view problems in the abstract and would rather seek the opinions of others. If you know upfront that someone has a different style than you, you can adjust your expectations and be better prepared to compromise. Understanding Myers-Briggs personality profiles also goes a long way in enhancing team communication skills. The social extrovert and the more low key introvert must learn to meet in the middle in order to ensure that they can clearly express their own ideas. By regularly interacting and working with other types, employees are also able to hone their persuasion abilities. For more where this came from, have a look at the full post at Intuits Fast Track blog.

The Objective of Your Resume in Israel
The Objective of Your Resume in IsraelIf you are trying to apply for a job in Israel, resume writing is the key to get a first interview. Most Israelis who try to visit Israel, mostly to get an interview through this means. In fact, many Israelis start their careers by getting jobs through this route. As previously mentioned, there are many different types of resumes. However, if you want to be effective in resume writing, it is essential that you remember that the objectives of your resume are not necessarily the same as yours. Most Israelis have a slightly different objective than Americans do. The objectives on resumes are somewhat dependent on your goals in Israel. One of the most common objectives is 'To work in the private sector'. For most people who come from America, this is the goal, which is similar to the dream they had when they were kids. Most of the time, people end up working in the public sector or in the high-tech sector of the economy. It depends on the length of you r stay in Israel.Another common objective is 'To work in academia in the fields of humanities or natural sciences'. This is also somewhat like your childhood dream. For most Americans, this is not the objective because academia is not what they aspire to.The first objective of your resume in Israel is to showcase your skills and abilities to the potential employer. The second objective is to show you have what it takes to fit into the company culture. These two objectives are very important because in Israel, the companies don't care how experienced you are or how much experience you have. While your resume in Israel is not based on what you know, it is based on what you can offer the company in terms of knowledge and abilities. The type of experience you have is irrelevant because ifyou cannot give them that, they will find someone who can. They don't care about what you know, but what you can do to serve them.Resume writing in Israel is about your objectives and the skills and capa bilities you possess. In order to be successful, you need to demonstrate both. Do you?So, to summarize, if you are looking to apply for a job in Israel, you will have several different objectives, which you must consider. However, when you write your resume, you must be focused on your objectives first. In Israel, the employers don't care about what you know, they care about what you can do for them.

Volunteer work helps your career while you help others
Volunteer work helps your career while you help others We are entering the age of volunteerism. Generation X has shifted charity from the hierarchical, corporate-backed methods of the Red Cross and United Way, to a grassroots, episodic volunteerism of, say, tutoring neighborhood children. And Generation Y is donating more of their time to charitable causes than perhaps any generation in history. According Leslie Lenkowsky, professor at The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, 90% of college-bound high school students volunteer. Young people are determined to make a difference; they accept only a mission that is close to the heart and take action only when they can get their arms around the whole project. These attitudes affect choice of both charity and career, and increasingly the two overlap in ways that finally dignify the word synergy. Melissa Krodman graduated from Boston University with a communications degree and joined a casting agency in England. But she found that industry was no match for her values. She wanted to do something larger in media, but she wasnt sure what. Also, she says, I was faxing and doing things where I wasnt learning very much. So she moved back to the United States to regroup, and she volunteered at Whats Up magazine. Bruce Tulgan studies the working lives of young people, and he sees Krodmans criteria as typical for recent entrants into the workforce. Mission is especially important for both career and charity, but then they want to know what theyll be doing. They ask, What will I learn? Who will I work with? In many cases, volunteering can add both mission and key experience to ones work life. Enter episodic volunteering: short-term, project-based, local, and hands-on, this is the type of charity that can improve your karma as well as your career. Aaron Hurst is president and founder of the Taproot Foundation, which provides ways for people to donate their skills to discreet projects for nonprofit organizations. He says, In the first ten or fifteen years of a career people have limited money giving ability but can give a relatively significant donation of time and skills. The average Taproot volunteer donates five to seven thousand dollars in work, and they could have never given that much in cash. For some volunteers, time with a nonprofit can shine light on a true calling. Krodman explains that, For a long time I didnt know exactly what I wanted to do. Volunteering at Whats Up gave me a much more clear focus. Whats Up introduced me to media that inspires activism. Thats a part of the picture I didnt have. Even those who know their true calling can expand their skill set by volunteering for challenging projects. Hurst says, Experiential learning is the best way to teach adults, especially when it comes to soft skills like leadership. Law firms have used pro bono work as a great training tool, and now its spreading to other industries. Hurst gives an example of a graphic designer for Hewlett Packard who had used the same font and colors for five years. Volunteering was a good way to stretch his design skills. One of the most frustrating aspects of an entry-level job is the lack of responsibility. Krodman points out that volunteering is a good way to gain responsibility fast: In an organization where you have bosses and work for someone else there is a certain amount of climbing you have to do. At Whats Up, I am my own boss and I get to do work that I would not get to do at a big corporation until years down the line. And no matter where you are in your career, volunteering is a way to build a network. A typical Taproot branding project, for example, combines a project manager, brand strategist, graphic designer, and copywriter, each from a different company. This benefit is not lost on Krodman. She used the contacts she made through volunteer work at Whats Up magazine to find her ideal job one that provides solid mission as well as solid salary. But what would she do if she landed that dream job and didnt have to work at cafes to pay rent? Volunteer more, she says. Theres so much to be done.

How Your Employees are Putting Your Business at Risk of a Cyber Attack
How Your Employees are Putting Your Business at Risk of a Cyber Attack Over the last 12 months, 32% of all businesses identified cybersecurity breaches, according to the Cyber Security Breaches Survey. The most common attacks reported by companies that detected attacks were phishing (80%), impersonating an organization in emails or online (28%) and viruses, spyware or malware, including ransomware attacks (27%). All of these attacks take advantage of employees and pose significant risks to businesses. An effective cybersecurity strategy must involve appropriate controls to maintain a base level of security, and a monitoring system to look for attempts to violate the policy, which should be underpinned by training for all employees. Many companies fail to consider that their people are as important as the software they use when it comes to protecting themselves against cyber threats. Progressive technology provider Evaris is urging recruiters and HR managers to make the provision of basic IT training mandatory during the onboarding process for new employees to help reduce the risk of costly security breaches. Lack of IT training in UK businesses There is an assumption that new employees have at least a basic knowledge of IT and IT security, and despite companies understanding the threat that users operating within the infrastructure can cause, these skills are not being checked within the first month of employment. A survey conducted by Evaris found that 65% of UK professionals did not receive mandatory IT training in their first month of employment in their current or most recent role. Of these individuals, 74% had never received any IT training at all in their current or most recent role, despite 86% of all respondents saying that they worked on a computer every day. Whatâs more, there is a consensus that employers do not value the ongoing development of their IT skills. Some 45% of respondents said their employer takes the development of their IT knowledge either ânot so seriouslyâ or ânot at all seriouslyâ. Just 11% said they felt their managers take this issue âvery seriouslyâ. How hackers target employees There are a number of low-tech methods that hackers use to take advantage of employees some of which may seem too simple to be believed. These methods include: Social engineering hackers posing as people within an organization to obtain access to the network, for example, presenting themselves as a member of IT security and asking for a network password. Baiting hackers use data captured about an employee to trick them into revealing information. An example is using the information listed publicly on LinkedIn to target a junior employee by posing as the CEO to request an action to be carried out. Unsubscribe buttons hackers coax employees into downloading malware by hiding links to malware sites in email unsubscribe buttons, which must be included on all marketing emails. Keylogger also known as keyboard capturing, this technique records and stores strokes of a keyboard and can often pick up personal email IDs, passwords and other sensitive data. Internal threats current or former employees can gain unauthorized access to confidential data, or infiltrate a businessâs network with malicious intent. This can include infecting machines with keylogging software or âshoulder surfingâ the act of observing someone typing their password. The relationship between personality and cybersecurity Multiple studies have been carried out with the intention of exploring the relationship between personality traits and how they impact a personâs ability to comply with security policy or increase the risk of being a victim of cyber security. Whilst their findings vary and are never definitive, they do tend to share a common set of findings. Individuals who are extroverted are more likely to violate cybersecurity policies when compared to conscientious or neurotic individuals. Social media users who rank highly in openness to experience are also more likely to set fewer privacy settings, which makes them vulnerable to attacks. Women who are categorized as conscientious have a tendency to fall victim to phishing scams. However, there does not appear to be a correlation between a manâs personality type and his vulnerability to phishing. In nearly all of the studies, the intent of an individual and their actual behavior can be very different, exacerbating the ability to predict security compliance behaviors. It is far too easy for an organization to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach to cybersecurity; however, this does not take into account the various personality traits of their users. For example, âneuroticâ individuals who feel they are diligently following a security policy yet are open to phishing attacks, the social media user for whom openness is the norm and will select the bare minimum of controls, and the renegade extravert who sees the violation of policy as a challenge are not considered in a âcatch allâ security policy. What should businesses do? It is in the best interests of all businesses across the board to ensure their employees have all the knowledge, awareness and skills they need to help protect the company against costly cyber attacks and data breaches. This means ongoing education and training, with the active involvement of the companyâs IT department. Each and every person in the workforce from the minute they start with the business should receive training to understand data management, protection and disposal best practice. The threat of cybersecurity attacks should not be underestimated, and it is up to employers to ensure that their staff have the tools they need to ensure company data is protected at all times. About the author: Mike Cohen, CEO at Evaris. He has more than 35 yearsâ experience in the IT sector, and is a respected thought leader in the industry and has held a number of senior roles, including interim management and managing director positions during his career.

The Growing Need for Nursing Educators
The Growing Need for Nursing Educators Nursing educators are an important part of the healthcare industry, because they provide the training and education to the next generation of nurses. Currently, there is a shortage of nurses as well as a high demand for nursing professionals, so the job outlook for nurse educators is high. There are several reasons why there is such a high demand for nurses. One of those reasons is many of the Baby Boomer nurses are retiring and someone needs to fill their place. Also, the senior citizen population One of the main reasons it has become a challenge to fill the nursing educator position is the lack of awareness of their contributions to the field.Nursing educators have the opportunity to teach in a variety of setting including educational institutions, hospitals, online learning programs and training facilities.Educators have the ability to speak at conferences as well as conduct research and hold leadership roles in the academic community. They can also specialize in different disciplin es such as cardiology, family health, pediatrics and mental health.Nursing educators teach students across multiple educational levels and are able to design, implement and evaluate the academic programs for nurses. Nurse educators have a flexible work schedule, access to the latest research and a high job security due to current lack of faculty. To learn more about the opportunities available to nurses who become educators look at this infographic from Duquesne Universityâs Online Master of Nursing Education program.Infographics Credit â" onlinenursing.duq.edu

How to Find a Job in Another State
How to Find a Job in Another State Fortunately these days, the task of finding a job in another state is less of an uphill battle than it used to be. However, there are still real challenges to securing a position from a distance. Now, it also depends on industry and company size. Larger companies are going to have offices all over the world, perhaps, while smaller companies are going to be regional boutiques that will be harder to uncover. In either situation you need to be prepared for challenges so here are my steps for how to find a job in another state: Identify a location Where do you want to go? If you work for a larger organization, ask around to see if they have offices in your desired state. Talk with your managers about requesting a transfer. If you work for a smaller company, still consider asking your manager if there are any opportunities to start a new office in your desired location or if they can provide any help for you to relocate. This one is sensitive depending on your supervisor. Some are more open to helping their employees transition than others. If you are a supervisor, please consider being the former. Research The next step is to get the lay of the land by researching. Google will be your best friend! There is so much information out there now. Look up governmental websites that give you forecasting on the current and expected job market. Also get the rankings of best cities to move to just to see where your new location stacks up. Gather all the information you can, good or bad. How is the housing market? What is the city known for? For example, Houston = oil and gas; Hollywood = entertainment; NYC = finance. That doesnt mean you are necessarily looking at these well known markets and industries everyone still needs a grocery store or their hair cut! But knowing this kind of information can help you understand the culture to best position yourself for the change. Also, use websites like glassdoor.com and vault.com to get company/salary information. Network Next, if you are still convinced that youd like to relocate, its time to make connections. Please dont fall in the dark hole of randomly applying to everything you see. Its easy to do and it feels like you are making progress. However, these days, 10% of people find jobs by applying online. The success factor is networking. During this step, making an appointment with a Career Coach can help. A career coach can help you formulate a networking strategy and work with you to make productive connections. The more connections you make, the more reach you have. Start talking to friends, and friends of friends, and cousins, and aunts, and grandparents. Weak ties and acquaintances can also be a very good resource during this stage. Update your LinkedIn profile and use the find alumni tool. This is the alumni database from the university or college you graduated. You can search by location. Re-kindle those old connections. Dont be afraid to reach out, most people are willing to help. Professional organizations can help too. Find a professional organization that is in your current location and also has presence in your desired location. Reach out to the organization in the new state to create more connections. Apply I honestly recommend that you put the majority of your time into networking rather than applying online. However, applying online can work so dont completely ignore it. People still get jobs this way, but I think you will reach burn out or discouragement faster by only applying online. Once you have made the connection and someone has asked you to apply, that is when you pour your energy into the application process. Youll have to update your resume and customize a good cover letter, but hopefully this is a formality rather than the first time someone is considering you. Save for expenses to visit Hopefully by this stage, you have secured an interview. Save some cash to pay for flights and hotels for the interview. Some employers do skype or online interviews now; however, I would be prepared to make a visit. Plus, its a good way for you to scope out the area, get a feel for the actual culture of the office, and gain all the information you need to make a decision. Finding a job in another state and relocating takes time. Prepare yourself for a journey with ups and downs and keep your eye on the prize to make it through. Good luck! The words Hire Me! appeared next to his website address and a picture of his face.â Iâm not suggesting that you go out and buy a billboard, but use this inspiration to help get creative in your job search. I love that Bennet stayed positive and passionate about finding a job. If you are narrow-minded in your career search you will get burnt out before you see results. iPhone App Tracks Path to Career Success...One Hour at a Time! - Work It Daily
iPhone App Tracks Path to Career Success...One Hour at a Time! - Work It Daily By J.T. O'Donnell This week on C-REAL-TV, I interviewed Ray Wenderlich, an iPhone App developer who took what he learned from The 10,000 Rule article to a whole new level. Ray became inspired when he realized virtually anyone can become an expert - no talent required. You just need to amass enough hours of learning and experience (i.e. Tiger Woods, Bill Gates). But, then he wondered...how do you track that? Three weeks ago, Ray sent me an e-mail letting me know our post was the catalyst for him to develop, LevelMeUp - an iPhone app that literally tracks your hours on the road to being an expert in your field. Imagine how exciting it was to learn just one article had made such an impact on a reader - so much so, that he built a career tool for others! And in case you are wondering, we are not getting paid to promote Ray's app or taking any kind of commission on sales through links on this site. There's no compensation involved. We're simply blown-away impressed by his desire to create a solution like this and had to share it with readers. In the interview above, you'll hear Ray explain: 1) Why having a tool to track your hours can motivate you improve, just like advancing levels in a video game. 2) How tracking hours can help you feel more in control and optimistic about your ability to become an expert. 3) How you may be racking up hours and not even realizing it! Ray's already gotten some excellent feedback from folks using the LevelMeUp app and hopes to add even greater functionality soon. I can't stress enough what a great example Ray is of what it takes to brand yourself as an expert. His proactive decision to design a solution says a lot about him as an employee, don't you agree? I hope everyone takes a minute to hear his story and then checks out his useful app. Why not start tracking your own hours on LevelMeUp and let us know how you are doing? Ray, congrats again on an app well-done. I'm pretty sure Malcolm Gladwell would agree...you are proof his 10,000 Hour Rule works! You can checkout Ray Wenderlich's app at the LevelMeUp website... Or, download it from the iPhone App Store... Have you joined our career growth club?Join For Free!

How One Woman Is Changing The Game For Cancer Patients
How One Woman Is Changing The Game For Cancer Patients Kristin Ciriello Pothier didnt platzdeckchen out to write a book. As the international Head of Life Sciences at Parthenon-EY and the creator and leader of EY Precision Medicine, Pothier has her hands full and she spends as much of her free time as possible with her husband and two children.Yet when she welches approached by a publisher who had read her articles and seen her speak about precision medicine, and he suggested that she channel her knowledge and insight into book-writing, Pothier says she couldnt turn down the opportunity. It felt timely it felt great, she told Fairygodboss. Her book, titled Personalizing Precision Medicine A Global Voyage from Vision to Reality, has just been published by Wiley. Precision medicine a customized treatment plan that empowers individual patients to partake in the decision-making process has been a focus of Pothiers throughout her 20-year career, which began in the 90s when she was work ing on the Human Genome Project. But the real genesis of Pothiers book began when she was just 12 years old and her grandfather, Angelo, was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer. I watched my parents really struggle with it, she recalls. It was a terrible death the lung cancer metastasized to the bone. At the time, in 1985, there was nothing we could do. It was a terrible experience my parents had to deal with.Pothier says her book is in part a nod to her grandfather, but also to every other part today whos dealing with similar pain including some of her closest friends, who have been willing to share their own cancer stories in the book. Its game-changing what weve been able to do in precision medicine, Pothier says, adding that as a result of this kind of targeted approach, breast cancer has totally changed over the past decade. Today, were diagnosing early and thoroughly, and there are a lot mora treatment options than we had in the past. Its about pinpointing the right treatme nt for the right patients at the right time, she explains, clarifying that precision medicine can even be applied to aftercare. Breast cancer patients who have undergone operations can choose, for instance, whether they want their nipples to be constructed or whether they want to get breast tattoos. In plus-rechnen to being an expert on precision medicine, Pothier knows a thing or two about what its like to be a woman in leadership in a male-dominated field. Yet while she acknowledges that the playing field is far from equal for men and women, she says that EY is a wonderful place to be as a woman. Theres a huge campaign at the company, called Women. Fast Forward, thats aiming to get more women into senior positions. This is a male-dominated space, still, Pothier says, but what I find is that I dont really think about it that much. She adds that she thinks women in her field who do make it to leadership positions actually have a competitive advantage. As we move forward, I find wome n leaders in healthcare and life sciences have a leg up. Women still tend to be caretakers and bear the brunt of that work, and this is even more pronounced in other areas of the world than it is in the U.S. When women are in leadership positions in this field, it allows us to build medical institutions that cater to caretakers and not to patients only.Pothier adds that EY is a particularly great place to be a working mom because of its generous parental leave policy, which offers 16 weeks of paid maternity leaveand 16 weeks of paid paternity leave. She feels fortunate to work for an employer whose values and culture havent hindered her career growth, but rather have encouraged and supported her journey to the top. And now, shes paying it forward. As she puts it As we bring the up next generation, we really try to push forward women-friendly policies and the women-in-leadership agenda.
